
Not to be confused with fennel since the plants look alike with a white bulbous bottom with green stalks and feathery green leaves, anise is used to add licorice flavor to both sweets and savories. The anise plant actually comes from the parsley family, and in India anise seeds are chewed after a meal to aid in digestion and to sweeten one's breath. Anise seeds and fresh leaves can be used in recipes interchangeably.
