I have nothing but love for the online cooking enthusiasts and comment section commentators. That's why I was a bit dismayed when the 7 Truly Useless Kitchen Gadget piece became the center of so much controversy. But, dear readers, you have honestly opened my eyes to the usefulness of some of the tools I observed to be 'useless.' Thank you for your input! That said, I'm still a little unsure about usefulness of the Egg Cracker. Or, maybe, I'm just kinda smitten with the technique I'm about to share with you...
In the kitchen, it's all about being the master of your domain. I think it's essential that you secretly fancy yourself as a hybrid between a young Emeril and a young Tom Cruise in Cocktail - effectively throwing spices and bottles behind your back, catching them and then yelling at your skillet - to thoroughly enjoy the craft.
The one-handed egg crack is commonly seen only deep in the inner sanctums of professional kitchens, observed only by chefs that have witnessed the routine innumerable times and are numb to its magic. Imagine for a second achieving the one handed crack in front of your four-year-old (I picture them totally stunned, mouth agape, before hollering and pumping their fist like Arsenio Hall). Perhaps you may even be able to regain cool points among the preteen crowd (that cred doesn't come easy). I'd like to see the cast of Twilight crack an egg with one hand... good luck with that one Robert Pattison.
My favorite thing about this video is the training, involving golf balls and quarters. Food Wishes is serious about making you a genuine culinary showman. I'm hoping this evolves into a full-on cooking technique boot camp, where we're invited to run through rows of tires, armed with flambeaus. Or, we can swing across mud puddles, while cracking an egg in our free hands.
Really, I'm just an old kitchen dog that's happy to learn a couple new tricks.
Food Wishes has more good pointers; so, be sure to check them out. Do you know other time savers or techniques that look downright sweet? Master of the food hacks? Can you debone a chicken in fifteen seconds or bake biscuits that only dirty one bowl? Share your pointers with us below.
