
Baked apples are the perfect dessert for holiday entertaining. You only need a few ingredients and they can be made ahead of time. Rinse, peel and core the apples,leaving about half-inch at the bottom so the apples will be able to hold the filling. Mix together your favorite spices with sugar. Cinnamon and nutmeg are great, but consider other spices like ginger, cardamom or Chinese 5-spice powder. You can also add dried fruits, like raisins, cranberries, currants, chopped dates and chopped nuts. Place the apples in a baking sheet and fill them with your mix of spices, dried fruits and nuts. Top each apple with a dot of butter then pour in your liquid – water, fruit juice or wine. You should have about a half-inch of liquid in your dish. Bake 30 to 40 minutes at 375 degrees, basting frequently with the liquid, until the apples are fork tender.
