If you watch Food Network, you've probably heard of Barefoot Contessa and Ina Garten's simple, effortless, extra fresh fare. Ina Garten owned a small specialty foods store in East Hampton, NY known for great prepared foods and most of all, stellar brownies.
Growing up I spent all my summers in East Hampton and on the weekends, specifically Saturday mornings, I would hop in my parent's station wagon and we would all drive into the village and stop at Barefoot Contessa for cold cuts, chips, the general weekend provisions, and I would always gravitate to the baked goods area.
Barefoot Contessa lived in an old white corner space with a white screen door to keep out the flies. The floors were checkered black and white squares about a foot by a foot, and when you walked in, you were forced to first, on the left pass the registers (with bags of candy) and on the right pass a beautiful array of baked goods (this is also where the coffee and hot chocolate station was located). Straight back in the center was a rectangular counter filled with salads, salumi, turkey, cheese, and around that were the refrigerated cases packed with drinks, frozen pasta, and bags of chips and such.
Ina Garten is an incredible cook and does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of East Hampton cuisine in the summer with her market fresh recipes using ingredients straight from the farm, or at least from local farm stands that populate Route 27.
Anyway, today I stumbled upon her Coffee Cake recipes posted on Ezra Pound Cake and it brought back all these memories.
While I haven't tried out this specific recipe, it looks amazing and if you are on the hunt for a great brunch sweet, without a doubt Ina's got you covered with this one.
