Beans are incredibly healthful, serve as a great source of protein, and  can help reduce cholesterol. Learning more about beans will help you add variety and nutrition to your diet.

Garbanzo Beans

Frequently called “chickpeas,” garbanzo beans are the main ingredient in hummus, a Middle Eastern dip.

Mung Beans

These are often used in Asian cuisine and come in a variety of colors like red, green, brown, and black. Some Asian pastries use a paste made from the red beans.

Black Beans

Often seen in Mexican food, black beans can be served with rice or as filling for burritos. One of its most popular uses is in its signature soup: black bean soup. This versatile bean can be found in a can as well as dried.

Lima Beans

Either light green or beige, these beans are relatively large compared to their fellow beans. Lima beans have a buttery taste that tastes delicious when salted with bacon pieces.

Kidney Beans

White, red, and dark red, kidney beans have multiple colors and uses. White kidney beans have a milder flavor and are frequently used in Italian cuisine. When cooked down, the white variety can take on a creamy consistency.  The red varieties have a sweeter flavor and are usually used in chili and thick soups.

Beans are also high in fiber and low in fat. Many varieties are canned, eliminating any cleaning or soaking steps so you can add them directly into your dish.
