The perfect snack, meal, or even dessert, grilled cheese can appear in a zillion forms from the standard cheese- bread combo to crazy creations that can be viewed in our Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwiches video. The famous bread and cheese combination of grilled cheese has also gained international prestige. The sandwich has matured through its travels and no longer consists of only two pieces of American cheese wedged between toasted white bread. Various countries around the world have put their own spin on the basic recipe creating fun and delicious sandwiches worth trying.
First, take a trip to England by grilling up their signature Stilton cheese. Top it with watercress and toasted walnuts on sourdough bread, and prepare to be amazed. You never knew England could taste this good.
Or melt pepper jack cheese, hot peppers, and diced tomatoes between two grilled tortillas, and you’ll get the Mexican grilled cheese: a quesadilla.
To try a Tuscan treat, top thick slices of country bread with smoked mozzarella, thinly sliced tomato, basil, garlic-infused olive oil, and balsamic vinaigrette.
For a taste of Spain, get the ham ready. Grill Manchego cheese and thinly sliced Serrano ham between two slices of white bread.
Create a Greek grilled cheese by combining black pepper, oregano, sliced tomato, olive oil, and feta cheese on top of a round loaf of crusty bread.
And, last but not least, one of the most famous bread and cheese relationships: the French grilled cheese. A crispy baguette can be paired with some softened Camambert cheese or, of course, some rich Brie. Or, because the French were never known to stop at the basics, they created the croque-monsieur: a union of Gruyere cheese and black forest ham, grilled between two slices of white bread, and topped with cream and more Gruyere. Yum!
