About two weeks ago I was brainstorming Easter article ideas and it dawned upon me...why should one have to buy a kit to dye Easter eggs? Plenty of foods naturally contain "dye" pigments, so why not use these foods to color Easter eggs? I thought my article was such a great idea, until yesterday I read that Serious Eats had written the exact same article, no!

So, Serious Eats suggests dying eggs with some of the same foods I had considered, beets, red cabbage, and turmeric, but here are even a few more.

First off, you are going to want to place your eggs in the bottom of a pan and fill with water just to cover the eggs. For each cup of water add one teaspoon of white vinegar.

To make a purple dye add violet flowers and purple grape juice.

To make a blue dye add the skin of red onions and blueberries.

To make a yellow dye use turmeric, or ground cumin.

To make a red dye use pomegranate juice.

To make a yellow/green dye add in green apple peels.

To make a pink dye use beets, cranberries or raspberries.

To make an orange dye, paprika works well.

So, pick your desired colors and bring the water to simmer with the additives. Cook eggs about 20 minutes then remove from heat and let eggs sit until they reach the desired color, voila!
