For most of my countless hours spent snacking, I’m not actually hungry, I’m just eating. Can you relate?

This wonderful phenomenon that some people naively misconstrue as a “problem” helps me to relax right before I begin to stress over the realization that every component of my pantry now lies in my stomach.

Does this mean I, or anyone else, should stop snacking? Blasphemy! I believe the best course of action is to simply choose foods that take longer to eat!

Need a salt fix?

Have some soup. You are only able to consume a spoonful per bite, talk about portion control. And, if it's extra hot you most definitely will not be able to finish the soup too quickly.

Or, try edamame. Since the soybeans are still in their shell, you must work to get it open.

Another good option, sunflower seeds. You will spend more time tearing apart the shell than actually eating the seed inside.

Sweet tooth?

Lollypops or hard candy. A constant dose of candy while still working on the same piece.

Ice Pops. Don't even try to bit into this frozen treat, ouch.

Pomegranate. After attempting to eat one you will be so fed up with food you will never want to eat again!

Studies have shown numerous benefits to taking one's time while eating. Consuming foods at a slower rate will allow the stomach more time to start digesting. If you stuff a massive meal down your throat in a matter of seconds, you can place too much pressure on your stomach muscles and wind up with an aching tummy. Giving your stomach more time to digest the food in smaller amounts makes the job easier.

Also, those that eat more slowly may end up eating less and therefore lose weight. Your stomach takes about 20 minutes to produce the hormones necessary to alert your brain that you are full. This 20 minute period begins once once your stomach starts to stretch. Eating more slowly gives your stomach more time to feel full, which could potentially result in eating less. -Paige Ross
