Welcome to Taste Test, a new monthly column that explores a specific ingredient or category of ingredients, and in a head-to-head tasting battle we tell you which fares the best. Because January is our "Healthy" month here at Good Bite, we've decided to sample an array of nut butters -- a great source of protein for those that don't eat meat. And while the obvious choice is to shmear peanut butter on a slab of white bread, here are a few other "butters" and options on how to enjoy. Sweet Ella's Organic Peanut Butter Made from sea salt and organic peanuts, a hint of sweetness can be detected in this mildly chunky peanut butter. Serve the old fashioned way, between two slices of bread. To taste the sweetness in the peanuts, avoid adding jam. ($6.49/13-ounce jar) Once Again Creamy Peanut Butter For those that like their peanut butter smooth, this is the way to go. Not as cloying and mouth-coating as other brands we tried, with a taste reminiscent of the filling found inside Nutter Butter cookies. Enjoy with crisp slices of apple or great for use in baking. ($5.59/16-ounce jar) Futters Dry Roasted Hazelnut Butter Very strong true hazelnut flavor in this coarsely-ground hazelnut butter. Another great baking butter, use this one in cookies, or even as a cookie filling. Could also be mixed with chocolate for a sweeter condiment. ($9.75/9-ounce jar) Once Again Crunchy Raw Almond Butter Made from raw, unroasted almonds, this noticeably sweet mild-flavored butter is great just as is! Because almond butter has a more subtle flavor than peanut butter, we suggest eating it straight from the jar. ($6.74/9-ounce jar) Fiddyment Farms Pistachio Butter Much harder to find than many of the other butters listed, this thick and creamy murky-green butter packs a powerful pistachio flavor. Though it could use a pinch of salt, we love this butter straight from the jar. It would also make an awesome base flavor for ice cream. ($6.50/8-ounce jar) Once Again Cashew Butter This extra creamy butter is oilier than many of the other butters we tried and works well for baking. For those that like the flavor of cashews, this is a fun ingredient with which to play around. ($10.89/16-ounces)
